Community Outreach
& Youth Programming
While we continue to fight to enact policy change to create safer, breathable communities, together with organizations like CVPE, EJHA and Coming Clean,
we also see a large part of our advocacy and role as a community organization to create deep community ties and support networks with children, parents, teachers and students alike to make sure we are always in tune with and ready to serve our people.
Dia de los Muertos
TEJAS honors the legacies of social and environmental justice leaders, community members, family, and loved ones. TEJAS dedicated three altars to our communities in 2024.
T.E.J.A.S. Altar
Our TEJAS altar is maintained year-round. This is a community space in our building to remember our friends, family, and loved ones who transitioned early or recently. We keep their memory alive and express our love by creating a sacred, meaningful space to reflect on their many contributions to our communities.
If you are visiting our Houston office, we welcome you to spend time at the altar, and we hope to share with you more about the loved ones you see there. We encourage the community to learn more about the culture of Dias de Los Muertos and reflect on what it means to you.
MECA Altar
TEJAS currently has an altar at MECA (Multicultural Education and Counseling Through The Arts) in remembrance of social and environmental justice leaders whose courage, vision, and dedication sparked transformative change and continue to inspire and guide us. The altar will be open to the public until November 21, and we encourage the community to visit and reflect on the work of the contributions of local, national, and international leaders.
Hartman Park Altar
TEJAS dedicated a community altar at Hartman Park to remember those around the community who have transitioned and want to be remembered by their loved ones. As an organization, we open this altar to the community and everyone may scan the QR code and upload a loved one’s picture and name. Which will then be added to the altar. This altar will also be up until November 21!
More On Community Outreach
T.E.J.A.S. is continuing to look for more ways to serve and benefit our Eastside and Greater Houston community. We believe that working with youth is a key tool to creating strong politically and environmentally conscious communities.
However, after Hurricane Beryl—as after any of Houston's previous natural disasters—we want to make sure that community support and mutual aid is at the forefront of our efforts and understand that is the most important thing we can do for our communities at this time.
With that being said, any community reports or requests can always be sent to tejascomms@gmail.com, and we would be happy to serve you in any way we can.
